Economy
The resurgence of the coal industry in Las Animas County has created a surge in the local economy over the past ten years. The region's last operating coal mine closed in 1996, and from 1995 to 1996 unemployment in Las Animas County skyrocketed from 5.1% to 9.7%. Those who relied on the coal industry for employment were left without work, and the results were felt county-wide as the economy crumbled. People were forced to leave Las Animas County to find employment, and some never returned. Since then, the Coal Bed Methane industry has helped gradually reduce unemployment in Las Animas County to 4.0% in 2006, the lowest in 20 years. The Coal Bed Methane industry's 2,400 area wells accounted for $503,564,540 in 2006, or 77% of Las Animas County's total valuation. CBM companies are also by far the largest taxpayers in the area, reducing property taxes for area residents
The energy impact grants awarded to the county in the last few years equate to millions of dollars and the economic impact for citizens of Las Animas County is over 500 jobs related to the gas and oil industry. Gas industry experts estimate that the combined economic benefits to the Las Animas County area from the coal-bed methane industry is over $20.5 million, which is currently the largest payroll factor in the county.

Trinidad Industrial Park
The Industrial Park site is located right on exit 18, off Interstate 25, with north and southbound ingress and regress. Phase One of our present Trinidad Industrial Park (approximately 115 developable acres) is completely sold out! Phase Two of the project (approximately 105 developable acres) has been approved and annexed by the Trinidad City Council and includes water, sewer, natural gas, telecommunications, streets, curb and gutter, and paving, etc. Construction to extend infrastructure to the second phase of the Park is now complete and lots are ready to sell! Phase Two lot sizes vary depending upon location. Lots may also be combined to meet your particular business requirements.
As the local economy continues to grow, investments in building industries such as tourism, methane gas, retail and commerce have paid dividends and continue to give Las Animas County its biggest economic upturn in 80 years. Responsible, progressive city planning has helped capitalize on the momentum generated in the past half-century, generating a consensus that the next several decades will be Las Animas County’s best yet.
